Scotland has passed legislation! Regulation of the Aesthetics Industry Is Changing — And It’s Bigger Than You Think

The Scottish Parliament has passed landmark legislation regulating aesthetics and high-risk cosmetic procedures.
Most of the conversation so far has focused on injectables.
But that’s only part of the story.
Because this shift doesn’t just impact advanced aesthetics — it reaches directly into the everyday treatments carried out in UK salons and clinics.
And many in the industry haven’t caught up yet.
This Isn’t Just About Injectables
While injectables have taken centre stage, the reality is much broader.
Treatments already common across UK clinics may fall under increasing scrutiny, including:
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
Microneedling
Chemical peels
Radiofrequency (RF)
Cryotherapy
Laser treatments
Multi-modality facial devices
These are not “low-risk beauty treatments” when performed incorrectly.
They involve:
Skin penetration
Blood products
Heat and energy-based devices
Controlled skin trauma
Which means regulation was inevitable.

The Industry Has Been Operating Ahead of the Law
For years, the sector has expanded faster than regulation.
Treatments have become more advanced. Devices more powerful. Results more clinical.
But training, qualifications, and standards?
Not always aligned.
This legislation is the first clear move towards correcting that imbalance across the aesthetics sector as a whole.
What the New Law Means
Under the new framework:
High-risk aesthetic procedures must be performed by or under the supervision of healthcare professionals
Treatments must take place in regulated, registered premises
Under-18s are now banned from receiving non-surgical cosmetic procedures
Regulators can inspect and intervene where unsafe practice is suspected
And importantly — there is a transition period until September 2027.
Why This Matters to Every Clinic Owner
Even if you don’t offer injectables.
Even if you consider your treatments “standard.”
This is about how aesthetic procedures are classified, delivered, and regulated moving forward.
If your business includes:
Advanced facials
Skin treatments
Device-led services
Results-driven protocols
You are part of this shift.
Ignoring it is not an option.
The Reality: The Industry Is About to Divide
There will be two types of businesses:
Those who act early:
Invest in regulated pathways
Strengthen qualifications
Align with clinical standards
Build credibility
And those who delay:
Unsure where they stand
Reactive instead of prepared
At risk when enforcement tightens
Regulation doesn’t destroy industries.
It exposes weak foundations.

This Is Where Strategy Matters
This isn’t about panic.
It’s about positioning.
The clinics that succeed over the next 2–3 years will be the ones who:
Understand where they currently sit
Identify gaps in compliance and training
Build a clear pathway into regulated aesthetics
Because this is no longer just about treatments.
It’s about protecting your business, your reputation, and your future in aesthetics.
